Just started PT again

Today I found out why the army thought it was a great idea to train me on assault courses and it’s practical use in life ,I have never seen a 12ft wall with a rope on it I had to climb, never seen a set of monkey bars all nice and smooth to swing across .I did once have to cross a river on a tight line but that wasn’t covered in the assault course .The old school of PT was to have some small brain muscle bound freak chasing you around a 6 mile route shouting like a woman to move yer arse and at a time this is a good method of fitness being as you have no way to complain or do anything after as they beat you into the ground till your nothing more than a puddle of green weighted down by webbing and bergan .So how does this relate to me in my second life I have a sprog or a child if you will and Baby Kilt is roughly 16 months old which means in baby terms coming close to the terrible two’s yep she is into everything .

How does this relate well I was at the local jungle gym and to anyone who hasn’t been there with kids its a mecca for hyper kids to run around in a safe place and because I’m a bit of a protective father i have to go with her to make sure she is safe at all times its a fathers job and by the looks of today I wasn’t alone by the amount of other fathers who were doing the same thing …………..or we are all big kids and want to play on the gym as well ,anyone asks it the first one Ok  yep we had a great time and afterwards I felt like  had moved my ass through the gates of hell but loved every minute of it

The hard bit >>>

And how does this come under old school fitness ,well the first part doesn’t but it was great craic to do and an enjoyable morning from rope bridges to slides ,coming home I knew I had to take the dog out for a walk and he needed a good one so I picked up my webbing set and grabbed his lead an took him out for a TAB or what use to be called a tactical advance to battle.they have now changed the name of it to something trendy and media happy  It was fun to go out an do it without having a platoon running with you or being made to run up the hills with all your gear on no more wearing helmets or carrying a rifle (that bit I do miss) .all I had was myself my bush buddy my webbing set and a route to follow at my own fast pace using the long lane as a warm up we set off happy bush buddy sniffing and getting rid of his last meal through his bowel and not forgetting to cock ones leg on places where other dogs could of pissed I myself was stretching off my legs and getting ready for a bit off a run WALKING up the hill parts but at a strong pace I was passed by a runner who gave me an odd look because of the webbing set I was wearing but I just put my head down and kept going lead in hand and keeping to my pace

So following the trail we pushed on and did run up a few humps and I must admit I did have fun doing it so did the dog off and round up and down we got to the highest part after that it was all down hill we passed the runner again on his way down who was surprised to see me running up the humps dragging the dog happily along. The Old way of doing it was to run 200 meters for every 500 meters of walking and I kept to that .mostly plus we ran all the way down the hill to the start of the trail as for the time or distance we covered well your more than welcome to ask the dog as I’m slightly embarrassed at how I’ve let my fitness levels fall to such a low stage at this point of my life

The plan

My plan for the summer is to do this once a week between children ,dogs ,wife and work i should be able to keep to the plan and slowly get back my fitness I could go off half cocked but last time I did this I ended up getting injured and being put out of action is not on my cards at any level For strength training I do that at work as I have to life heavy items there for roughly 11 hours a day that does have the effect of improving what you have if you want an easy day does that for a man .So here’s to improving and getting better for life of children dogs and a wife who likes to throw all sorts at me hopefully more jungle gym time

cheers for now

Bush craft equipment gear I use

It seems to be a fad to throw up photos of your bush crafting gear so here is my set up –

I’m using a system were my EDC rolls into my bush gear and my bush gear will roll into my long distance bergan  by pulling off the back pouch and slipping on my large daysack for extra gear needed Image

Why yes ,yes I am using a PLCE webbing set up (Personal Load Carrying Equipment ) and the reason that I am using the old gear, it works well with my body movement when I am being dragged up and through the woods chasing deer or whatever my bush buddy has his nose too and that could be up steep banks or thick bushes .I picked the webbing set as I have odd and fond memories of using it so I know the track record and problems that it can have from rubbing to nipping to sagging .I have the gear set up in a “south African” configuration .That is to say the rocket pouch in the middle is fixed to the yolk of the webbing set and keeps the centre of gravity close to the core meaning my balance wont be unaffected  by much

As for the stuff that I use this is my basic set up .The bayonet was placed on there to make space for a SoG Tomahawk that will be with me in a few weeks and the other bit of gear that wasn’t in the photo because it would cause a barking fit and a mental 5 minutes with AK is his two dog leads I use a 17 foot search lead that can be clipped onto me gear or belt to keep him stood by so I can work were I need to knowing he won’t go playing with the deer without me and the damn mutt has done that a few times when he was a pup

So the break down of the contents

This is it mostly stripped down to the bones ,the first aid kit is tightly packed into a small area as is the rest of the gear I am working on the notion of less is more and I’ve seen to many folk get large bergans and fill to the top with stuff they don’t need ( one person I know goes for a 4 stone weight carry with his set up ) .The old adage is you’ll fill what you have all the kit I have here would go into a medium day sack with room to spare

the long middle jet or rocket pouch has my sleeping bag ,basha ,and bivi bag ready to be pulled out of in order of use when I set up camp .After that working left to right along the belt ,I have an empty pouch for my coffee mug and spoon (not in photo but being washed ),gardening secateurs,3 snaplights for camp, lighter ,bayonet to be removed for the tomahawk ,air rifle ammo ,para cord ,the ever useful bungee cords (including one on the webbing ) ,a folding saw ,one tin of spread for rations ,one candle biscuit browns and fruit for the lunch time snack with my coffee , a small gas burner and 4 hour gas bottle (handy if I cant get a fire going ) tooth brush and tooth paste , ass wipes or toilet roll take yer pick ,first aid kit ,3 CO2 12g capsules for my air rifle and a smoke grenade for safety and marking One of the pouches not mentioned contains a full 24hour ration pack and my mess tin for cooking with .If i come across a proper metal mug I’ll swap them over

The first aid kit is an important factor for anyone going out and about in the wild you are roughly about 3 hours away from the start of a rescue so I’ve kept it simple and compact but covering most of my bases Natural rubber gloves ,condoms ,tampons ,eye wash, pain pills , an Israeli bandage and a British field dressing and  a CPR mask .The first aid pack is also to be used for the dog as well as myself but I hope never have to use it in an emergency ,but who would ?

I’ve left water out as I have a bladder that myself and AK can drink from it goes under the the rocket pouch

hope this is interesting and helpful to all who read it

Agrip from Brooks Tactical System

A wee while ago Brooks and I were chatting on line about what I should do next for my blog entry on here with the usual things that came up and a few that never crossed my mind or some I’ve no knowledge about yet

Brooks said “why not do one on my product ” this threw me slightly as I knew he worked at a company just didn’t know he owns the company . So to google I looked and came across Agrip a rubber type cover to put on your pistol grip to help you ,well keep hold of your pistol or firearm in all weathers

Being in the UK the gun laws favour the criminals as in they still get the guns anyway or the ones who jump through near impossible rules and regs .Me I stick to airsoft now its enough to keep my skill base sharp and a way for myself to deal with PTSD

SO Brooks sent me in the post a set of his product and after I looked at them I was surprised to the feel of them its like suede leather but of rubber ??? I think ? Placing these on an airsoft MP5 I knew from dealing with the real steel ones it might not fit as good but I was wrong they went on so easy it was done in 5 min with out a problem

The kit I got in the mail it was for an MP5 pistol grip

Image

A quick clean on the pistol grip with  the wipes to make sure it was clean and free from the normal grease and mud I often find myself in with my gear

Image

After placing it on the back of the grip the rest just followed into place with no problems I had to peel it back a few times to line it up but it was simple to do Image

About 5 min later in my livingroom watching sons of Anarchy job done .You just cant ask for it to be any easier than that

go have a look through his website and read the comments left by his past customers .The one that stands out for me was the guy who had his hand saved by the grip as it kept together the Glock after it blew apart because of a double load

I know with an airsoft gun i’ll never have to worry about that type of thing but it shows the quality of the product .Now the fun bit of testing this ,I have a 3 day game coming up in may and will be taking my now Agrip mp5 to put it through its paces and being the type of man I am I will run that thing raw like a day one week one recruit going through basic training
